Product Description
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals. On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man. A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.

Not just for dog lovers January 4, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even though the concept of a dog writing a novel about his family is unbelievable, I found myself believing every word. Even if you are not a dog lover, the dog's point of view will give insight into human behavior. Afterall, Enzo the dog believes that he will become a human in his next lifetime - that's how advanced he is. Enzo is loyal to Denny, his master, throughout his life and even tries not to be in pain when Denny has to take him to the vet because Denny already is in huge debt. I love that Enzo calls Denny's inlaws the Twins, and sometimes the Evil Twins, because they dress and act alike. A very rewarding read!
The Art of Driving in the Rain January 3, 2009 I have just completed The Art of Driving in the Rain. It was a tearful final few pages, and I don't have a habit of crying. I am British, and the stiff upper lip is quite dominant. But for those final pages, the pages where enzo and denny have their final moments together, for those pages I cried. This book took me by surprise, I was wandering those BookStar, carrying my dog, when a staff member came right up to me, out of the blue and told me to read it. I am so pleased she did.
Thank you Mr Stein for writing it and thank you Harper for publishing it!
Cute story January 1, 2009 It's a tale of a dogs life told by a dog. It was very cleverly done and at times I laughed and others I was sad.
It did have talk about race cars but the chapters were very short and those I chose not to read too carefully.
A cute story written by a furry friend. Quick read and one that tells a good story.
Outstanding Book January 1, 2009 This is the best book I've read in a long time. It's a story told by a dog, about his family, and besides being a great story, it's also very funny in parts. I have no interest in auto racing, but couldn't put this book down.
If you love dogs, you'll love this book. If you don't love dogs, maybe this book will change your mind. If you like a good story, try it. You won't be disappointed.
Life from a dog's point of view January 1, 2009 Who knew a dog could write so well? I really enjoyed the view of life from a dog's vantage point. This book has a little bit for everyone. For dog lovers, the dog's eye view. For guys who enjoy racing, some intersting ties of a life philoshphy to the physics and mental aspects of auto racing, and for the lady's a story about life and a custody battle. I hope Enzo writes another book soon.
