Have we found the next Green Bar Bill? October 17, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A Backpacker's Guide to Philmont is highly recommended for any Scout or Advisor who is planning their trip to Philmont. It does a good job running down what to expect on your visit and what to bring whether its your first visit or a return visit. Bill worked at Philmont for 10 summers in both the Ranger and Backcountry departments. In addition to his own knowledge, Bill has had the book reviewed by Mark Anderson who is the current Director of Program at Philmont and it aligns with all of the current information.
I would also say that the book is a good general guide for backpacking and carries a lot of useful information that will work for the Scout Patrol or the new backpacker. You learn a lot about backpacking and the Patrol method at Philmont and the book covers this well.
This is the book that I wanted for my treks in 89, 90, 91 and 92. Its also a fun diversion for the ex Philmont staff member like myself. I worked at Philmont in 96, 97, 98 and 99 and this book makes me want to go back.
