Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
From the renowned company that created the Swiss Army Knife a century ago comes the Explorer knife/multi-tool in a gift box that is perfect for any camping or hiking enthusiast. This very useful, 16-function multi-tool knife has been included in the Design Collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The Explorer contains 16 stainless-steel tools that will be there when you need them, but not burden you with its size when you don't. The standard tools include a large blade, small blade, corkscrew, can opener, small screwdriver for Phillips screws, bottle opener with large screwdriver, wire stripper, reamer, key ring, tweezers, toothpick, scissors, multi-purpose hook (parcel carrier), Phillips screwdriver and magnifying glass.

The Explorer comes incased in a red and silver box crafted to look like the Original Swiss Army shield/logo. The attractive gift box makes this knife the perfect present during the holidays. The box can then be re-used to store special items. As with all Victorinox items, the Explorer is made to exacting standards of construction in Ibach, Switzerland at the same factory that has made Swiss Army knives for the last century. Victorinox focuses on every detail, from selecting the finest materials to performing the final inspection. In addition, each individual tool has been hardened in a different way to stand up to its designated use. Outfitted with a nylon handle and aluminum housing, the Explorer carries a lifetime warranty.

The Explorer measures just 3-1/2 inches long when closed and contains 16 stainless steel tools.

About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

5 out of 5 stars Quinticential pocket knife-Fantastic!   July 7, 2008
I have owned various incarnations of Victorinox Swiss Army knives for almost 3 decades. I think I am on my fourth now. Two lost and one given away. It lives in the pocket of my jeans every single day.
They change the model names and features around from year to year.
The Explorer is my current favorite and is essentially THE knife I have owned for all these years.
One of the major qualifying elements for me is the Phillips Head screwdriver, which I use regularly. Many of victorinox's models have this screwdriver coming out of the handle perpandicular to the handle's length. Which seems absolutely ridiculous. It's very awkard to use effectively in that configuration. Much better when it comes straight off the end of the handle, as a typical screwdriver does.

So that's what I look for first. The large knife blades, small knife blade is great. The scissors are great...more than a gimmick. I use them frequently. (Be careful not to overbend the spring when "adjusting"...although you can get replacements. I replaced mine in Rome several years ago at a tiny knife shop)
I use the magnifying glass as well...for a whole bunch of stuff. And more so now that my eyes are starting to go!
Essentially, everything on here has a purpose and is useful in my daily life, with the exception perhaps, of the fence-wire-puller thingy. It is a reasonable size and weight. No extra wood camping saw or chainsaw or anything else that's only going to get use once a year.
Manufacturing quality and finish on these are great. As they say, "Don't be fooled by imitations".
Perfect knife: Great features, nothing extraneous, good weight, great quality, and great price.
Don't lose it and you'll have it for the rest of your life.

4 out of 5 stars A good value if purchased as a combo   July 3, 2008
The price for this one is pretty good if you purchase it with another knife to get free shipping. Can't say much about the Explorer - its a nice little knife. The shield case looks metal, but is cheap plastic. I could have done without it.

5 out of 5 stars Its there when you need it!   July 3, 2008
Swiss Army knife is so useful and its small and compact it fits into my lil black purse...can't go wrong...

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pocket tool   June 9, 2008

I bought this for my 6 year old. She was admiring my 25 year old Climber knife on when I showed her the other knives she wanted one with a magnifier glass. The price was unbeatable at twenty bucks. This knife sell for forty dollars every where else. I wish the box was tin instead of painted plastic.

I saw this for a great price and added it to my collection, which includes the Champ, Super Tinker, Classic, and Soldier. Like the rest, this thing is amazingly high quality and defines "handy". I like the Phillips mounted in the front where it belongs.
