| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The new UCO MightyLite XL is a great light for travel, outdoor, or home use. It is lightweight, compact, and made from aluminum to be durable. It also offers two functionalities, the normal everyday flashlight, and the stretched, area glow lantern. To improve its usefulness, a strap and carabiner are included with the lantern. It can easily be hung inside a tent, or anywhere else. The batteries are included (Three AAAs), and will power the MightlyLite for 22-30 hours.

Great Idea, Lousy Engineering January 26, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Unlike most other LED light-thingies, this one specifies exactly which LED it uses: Nichia Rigel. So, if you were curious about this interesting but rarely used LED, this is it.
The barrel slides up and down. Up, it is the size of 2D cells and is an area lantern; down, it is the size of 1 and a 1/2 D cells, and is a regular flashlight. As a flashlight, it holds its own against Mag Instrument Three Cell LED AA Mini Maglite Flashlight with Holster, Black #SP2301H. The aureole and hotspot was different, but it was not clear which one was brighter, so, call it a draw. This speaks well of the Rigel, and I was surprised it held its own against a Luxeon III. It is also DC regulated, so it should be able to suck out very last drop of battery juice before dying; I would like to know if it has a 'moon' mode of dim to give you a heads up just before the battery dies of if just blinks off. I have not done a total battery drain test, yet. As a lantern, you just pull up; it was not as bright as Sylvania LED Mini Lantern (L562), but still usable; better, you can stand it on its head or tail, depending on which direction you want the light to go. So, this really is 2 flashlights in one.
The bad news: I am not confident about its durability or ability take use and abuse in the field. Mainly, I am concerned about the tail cap. It is constructed of a grey plastic. The switch to turn it on and off feels kind of cheap, and easy to break with regular use. There is also a molded in clip that you can flip up, but I am willing to bet that I can break it off without much effort. Loading batteries is also a problem. The directions to load the batteries are molded into the barrel on the edge, but you need a flashlight and magnifying glass to see them. There is a marking for "ON" and "OFF", but the black tik mark on the barrel you use to line up the tail cap is not that obvious, and you have to rotate the barrel a few times to find that small, inconspicuous mark. Looking directly at the LED did glare rather strongly, but not as painfully as Coleman's LED lanterns; I wish the plastic of the lantern part was a little opaque; I would trade a little light for being able to look towards the lantern comfortably.
I really like this flashlight/lantern. It would be the ultimate tool to put into your ovenight backpack or emergency supply kit. Pity it is not durable enough for these uses.
