| Customer Reviews: Limited utility. February 4, 2010 Kraven Moorehead (Portland) For everyday use, I would not recommend this knife. The blade has a needle-sharp point, but the blade itself is not sharp. The blade is 440C stainless, which is ok, but it is finished with BLACK PAINT, which begins to wear off as soon as you first open it. The thumb studs are too small-- it takes practice to be able to open it with one flick, and then only when you hold it just right. Good luck if you're under stress. The price is a little to high as well; should be < $20.00.
On the plus side, once the blade is open, the ergonomics are good--It fits the hand well. Boker also includes the tiny TORX wrench and another special tool to replace the so-called 'glass-breaker tip' with a tip that looks like a ball point pen, and that's definitely good. With the pen tip in place, this looks exactly like a pen in your pocket; also a plus.
I carry and use a knife every day as a cutting tool. This is not suited to that purpose. As a defensive weapon, it could make small puncture wounds of 1 5/8" or less. It's best feature is it's super low profile.
Interestig idea, but far from perfected December 19, 2009 Ascetic Barabas (Upstate NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got this because it was fairly cheap and seemed interesting. It has a lot of problems, however. I disagree that the blade is sharp. I can brush it against my arm and it will not cut unless I apply hard purposeful pressure - a scalpel would have sliced me all up with the same light strokes. The angle of the edge is too steep and the shape of the blade has no belly at all. This design would only make extremely shallow cuts with the tip or the tiny point you see just above the recurve. The blade seemed specialized for stabbing, which makes little sense on such a short blade. This could hurt someone's eye or maybe the back of their hand if they grabbed you and you stuck it in, but then again virtually any blade could do that. This blade would be very inadequate for any other sorts of slashing or thrusting in a self defense situation. I usually advocate a weapon but I can honestly say that for the average male, bare hands would be more effective than this item. The thumb stud is small and spaced tightly near the handle, it would be extremely slow or difficult to flip this blade out under stress.
The only benefits to this item are: It is cheap (can find it for $20 at places). It is as easy to carry and conceal as a small pen. The small glass breaker cap at the end could be useful. It is fairly interesting just from a design viewpoint, I wish some company would implement it better.
A metal handled scalpel, an awl, a S&W tactical pen/kubotan, or the CRKT Ringer II hawkbill skinner would all be far better than this item, if you want a very small last ditch defensive item.
Sharp, but... November 1, 2009 drood51 (California, USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
yes, this blade is sharp...very sharp!
but after 2 weeks the paint on the handle is flaking away...not good. the handle should have been anodized...NOT painted!
all in all it's a good tool.
